Sandy junior Kobe Sparks scores a run against Gresham Wednesday, May 15.

It was smooth sailing for Sandy baseball in a season-ending series against Gresham.

The Pioneers could do no wrong in the final outing of the 2024 season, with a pair of dominant wins. First was a 7-0 shutout at home over the Gophers Monday, May 13.

The follow-up, a 9-1 win Wednesday, May 15, on the road, was even better.

For No. 10 Sandy (20-6, 10-4 League) the scoring came early. In the opening inning they knocked home four runs. Senior Aaron Menchaca Olivas brought home junior Kobe Sparks and senior Donvin Crouch; then junior Max Green smacked a deep double to score junior Nate Reel and Menchaca Olivas.

In the 2nd inning senior Matthew Kosderka hit a double to make it 5-0; junior Brayden Sivertsen added another on a steal home on a wild pitch; and then junior Cooper Hibbs and Green scored runs in the 5th to make it 8-0.

On the mound it was a pair of pitchers who secured the win — Kosderka had 4 strikeouts and only gave up 2 hits in just three innings; and senior lefty Cole Younger kept it going in the back-half of the win.
