Sandy wrestling's Noah Baker.

The clash at 157 pounds between Gresham and visiting Sandy was one to remember.

Vance Abbott, wrestling for the Gophers, and Seth Hooley, repping the Pioneers, were locked in a tight contest filled with near falls, takedowns, and a whole bunch of squirming reversals.

It was 8-8 after the second period, and late in the third the combatants traded reversals, before a pause from the official was called at 12 seconds. With the crowd roaring — so loud neither wrestler nor official heard the buzzer — Abbott nearly got the winning takedown.

A few moments later he secured it in the overtime period, taking down Hooley for the 13-10 win that left both exhausted.

It was a frenetic and exciting contest, one that showcased what fans got to see when both Gresham and Sandy had a wrestler ready to go. But while the Gophers battled on Senior Night against the visiting Mt. Hood Conference favorites, the roster was too thin to muster any chance at the dual meet win.

An avalanche of talented Pioneers wrestlers were able to put their feet up for easy 6-point forfeits, and Sandy claimed the 60-19 win Thursday evening, Jan. 30.
