Sandy boys wrestling wins 2025 Mt. Hood Conference Tourney

This was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding year for Sandy boys wrestling.

Despite a massive turnout of exciting young grapplers — more than 75 kids joined the program at the beginning of the year — there was some thought it would take time for those talented athletes to hit their stride. It is the perpetual curse of high school sports, turnover and change.

“We like to say ‘reload’ because we have a lot of talented, hard-working athletes we expect to grow into the big shoes vacated by last season’s seniors,” said Coach Larry Topliff.

Well the chamber is jammed with talent for Sandy wrestling, as the Pioneers once again hoisted the Mt. Hood Conference trophy with a dominating team effort that will send many wrestlers onward to the state tournament.

Sandy won the 2025 OSAA 6A Mt. Hood Conference district tournament, held Friday-Saturday, Feb. 14-15, at Gresham High School. The Pioneers had 340.5 points, trailed by Barlow (301); David Douglas (252.5); Clackamas (229); Nelson (193); Gresham (136.5); and Reynolds (123).

The top three finishers at each weight class automatically qualify for the 2025 OSAA 6A Boys Wrestling State Championships — Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 1, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 300 N. Ramsay Way. Fourth-place finishers were placed into a “pool” for a shot at the final tournament.

In total Sandy had 14 wrestlers qualify; Barlow had 9; Gresham had 5; and Reynolds had 5.
