Cross country sends both teams to state

The Sandy girls relied on a tight pack to secure a spot at the state meet, coming up two points short of a district title.

HILLSBORO — The Sandy girls cross country team packed its five scoring runners into the top-15 overall to claim a state meet berth, coming up one point short of St. Helens in a tight race for the Northwest Oregon Conference district title Wednesday at Westmoreland Golf Course.

Molly Murphy-Brown led the girls team in fifth place with a time of 20:32.1.

The Sandy boys finished third overall with 79 points, beating La Salle Prep (97) to claim the league’s final spot to Eugene.

Junior Michael Callaway won the race going away (16:09.6) to pace the Pioneers, as all five scoring Pioneers came in ahead of their La Salle counterpart.

The Pioneers will travel to Lane Community College in Eugene on Saturday for the 5A state championships. The girls race is set to begin at 1:15 p.m. with the boys race following at 1:50 p.m.
