Sandy boys wrestling earned a signature win over its rivals Thursday, Jan. 9, thanks to some talented performances on the mat.

The Pioneers bested visiting Barlow 41-31 in what was a back-and-forth nail-biter dual meet.

“This is definitely a bit of a ‘rebuild’ season, but we like to say ‘reload’ because we have a lot of talented, hard-working athletes we expect to grow into the big shoes vacated by last season’s seniors,” Sandy head coach Larry Topliff said. “We aim to win a conference title and a top-10 finish at state.”

The key moment against a resurgent group of Bruins grapplers was at the 175-pound bout. Barlow’s Samuel Abraham was up big on points against Sandy’s Jonathan Nuno, and seemed destined to secure the win by decision. That would have grown the deficit and put the reigning Mt. Hood Conference champs in a precarious place.

But Nuno made his move late, scoring a reversal that led to a crushing pin — a nine-point swing that helped secure the win.
